Based on the McChiken116 post below about an S2000 - electric versus hydraulic power steering in a performance car. I live in the city, so my car life consists of a steady diet of rental Sentras, Civics, Priiiiii, and once in a while a C Class Merc if I'm feeling itchy. I'm sure various of my rental cars have had EPS, but they're so disconnected that I simply don't care.
But has anyone out there driven a 911 or other performance car with both sorts of steering? I'd love to hear about it.

So, replying here as well so more people see it, as long as the feedback you get is built in properly, and the car reacts like anything else, electric power steering is a better way for most cars.

That being said, the feedback isn't always built properly.

I adopt the Sammy Hagar's BB/I Can't Drive 55 approach to performance cars on two points: =<5 gears, and no power steering are the best way for one to be. (2nd line lyrics viz "drive that slow, you know it's hard to steer... and I can't get my car out of second gear").
That being said, there are good performance EPS setups out there. The one on a Mini is decent and certainly not lifeless, but feels somewhat alien.

Electric power steering gets a bad rap because the early systems weren't as mature as hydraulics when they hit the market. Now there are plenty of decent electric racks that are as good as their hydraulic counterparts and ancestors. There are still terrible racks, both styles.

That is very true

Apparently my Volvo has EPS? I couldn't tell because it feels like hydraulic. I don't know. I'm not even sure any more

Really depends on tuning. My S2000's feels kinda numb, but recent Fords and BMWs with EPS that I've driven were fine. Also, I have a Camry with hydraulic power steering that sucks balls, but it's a Camry so it's allowed to suck.

I have seen Porsche enthusiasts go on for pages about how the weight loss isn't worth the direct feel, blah blah quackety quack. Maybe one day I'll get onto a track with two 911s - hydraulic and EPS - and see what I think. So much of this is subjective.
